Walkerston State School Memorial Library Honour Roll Print Page
The honour roll commemorates 19 former students of the school who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two. The Memorial Library was unveiled on the 5th September 1947.
A euchre party and dance was held in the Albion Hall on Friday night and the memorial library, which has been placed in position at the school, was unveiled. A large gathering assembled to witness the ceremony. Dance music was supplied by Mrs. Robb's orchestra and Mr. J. O'Neill was MC. Euchre winners were Mesdames Luscombe, Pitkin, Herman and Mr. A. Zahmel. A free gift waltz was won by Miss Jean Kinsey and Mr. G. Jones. Extras were played by Misses Joan Pascoe, Valmal Pitkin, and June Harvison. At 9.30 Mr. O. Pascoe, chairman of the school committee, called upon Rev. R. Maitland to address the gathering. He outlined the steps taken by the committee to provide the library.
The cabinet which was made locally is of silky oak, with a beautiful finish, Mr. Maitland also made mention of the fact that every available name of servicemen in this district would be placed on record. Mr. A. Dent spoke on behalf of ex-servicemen. Cr. C. J. M'Lennan was then called on to unveil the cabinet, which had the Union Jack and the Australian flags placed thereon. Mr. V. H. Dow, the headmaster, read the names of the district's fallen and then two minutes' silence was observed. Miss Joan Pascoe sang "Lest We Forget." Mr. Dow then explained the zoning that had been necessary to include all enlistments from the district, and particularly ex-pupils and teachers of the Walkerston school. The speaker made an appeal for further names that should be placed on the cabinet. Approximately 200 new books have been procured and these will be added to year by year.
