Martyrs ChapelPrint Page
The Martyrs Chapel commemorates New Guinea martyrs including medical missionary Mavis Parkinson who was killed by Japanese soldiers during World War Two. The chapel contains a small bamboo cross in a glass case presented by the Bishop of South Tokyo and a cross found in an abandoned German mission.
333 Christians lost their lives in New Guinea during the invasion and occupation of the island by the Japanese forces. The four women depicted in the stained glass window are representative of those who remained at their posts, refusing to desert the people they cared for.
