Dear Monument Australia visitors, we are a self-funded, non-profit organisation, dedicated to recording monuments throughout Australia. Over time the costs of maintaining this website have risen substantially (in fact they are probably larger than those of many companies who exist for profit). In the past we have borne all the costs associated with maintaining the website but we are now having difficulties in paying the monthly expenses.
If Monument Australia is useful to you, please make a donation to keep this historical and educational resource available. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

"Mauretania" Print Page

The plaque commemorates the voyage of the Mauretania which carried the 2nd / 27th Battalion and other troops from Australia to the theatres of war in World War Two. The plaque was presented to the Battalion by the Cunard line.
During the early stages of the war the ship transported Australian troops to Suez, India and Singapore but later she mainly served in the North Atlantic. Mauretania travelled 870,000 kilometres and carried over 340,000 troops.
The Mauretania was not designed to be an exceptionally fast ship and during her war duty her engines had received little attention for six long years of service as a troopship, she achieved a turn of speed in 1945 making the passage from Bombay to the United Kingdom at an average speed of 23.4 knots (43.3 kilometres / hour).
