District of Angaston Roll of HonourPrint Page
The bronze honour roll commemorates those from the District who served in World War Two.
Beautiful bronze honour roll, bearing 203 Angaston names of those who served in the last war, was unveiled by Mr A. Downer, M.H.R., in Angaston Institute at Sunday's largely-attended Anzac service. The massive plaque, to be affixed in the Institute vestibule, was arranged by the District Council, whose chairman, Cr B. J. S. Ninnes, in calling on Mr Downer to perform the ceremony, thanked the R.S.L.and all who had collaborated. Bronze tablets to those who made the supreme sacrifice was added to the Soldiers' Monument some time ago. Mr Downer, who was a prisoner of war in Jap hands for 3½ years, referred to the storm clouds endangering the peace—if such it could be called—following the war of 5½ years ago.
Their observance of Anzac Day, he said, held enormous significance: It was not enough to honour and remember, to unveil memorials. They must all attempt in a practical manner to achieve those ideals for which their comrades fought and died. A moral regeneration was needed; the application of Christian teachings to their lives. Mr E. Thorn (R.S.L.pres) presided, and Rev.L. C. Parkin had charge of devotions. Diggers T. Duffield, T. Hurn, T. Liddle and C. Chinner took up the collection totalling £13/11/-, for T.S.A.S.and A.I.F. Cemeter Fund. Mr C. Thorn conducted the combined choir in several anthems, and Angaston Band, which headed the preceding street march of Diggers, accompanied the singing under baton of Mr C. Weymouth. Mr D. Trescowthick was pianist.
