In memory of the men and teen aged boys who served on the US Army Small Ships in New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa during WWII and during the occupation of Japan.
From 1942 to 1946, Australian & New Zealand vessels that had been confiscated, leased or purchased were provisioned, victualled and armed at Wharf No 10 Walsh Bay prior to sailing to New Guinea and the islands north of Australia during the Battle for Australia.
No 10 Walsh Bay was also the location of the training school for apprentice seamen, which was held from April to July 1943. The students were boys of 14 to 16 years of age, there were three intakes each of four weeks duration.
The 163 boys who qualified were then sent to a combat area in New Guinea to assist in crewing vessels of British registry that were supporting the Australian and American troops who were fighting the Japanese.
