First Landing of the United States of America Armed ForcesPrint Page
The monument commemorates the first United States of America troops to disembark in Australia who came ashore on Glebe Island in March 1942 during World War Two.
SYDNEY, Tuesday. An obelisk commemorating the landing of the first American troops, in Sydney in March, 1942, was unveiled at Glebe Island Dock today by the Premier (Mr. McKell). The American Armed Forces were represented by Colonel Roy L. Schuyler, Base Commander of U.S. Troops In Australia, and the U.S. Consul, Mr. Charles Derry represented the American people. Mr. McKell said that Australia's alliance with America, forged in the darkest hours of war, had emerged as a strong and lasting friendship. Colonel Schuyler said that without the help of the Railways Commissioner (Mr. Hartigan) and Mr. Faulkse, of the Maritime Services Board, it would have been impossible to have moved the huge forces in Australia during the war. They had helped to move 1,000,000 men and 500,000 tons of equipment. When the war ended they had also aided in shifting the huge war machine left in Australia.
