N Class Destroyers Print Page Print this page

The window commemorates the N Class Destroyers who served in the 7th Flotilla Royal Australian Navy During World War Two.

This, the central light of the three-light window, commemorates the N Class Destroyers of 'Seventh Destroyer Flotilla 1940-45'. The upper section holds the insignia of the five ships, HMAS Napier, HMAS Nizam (with a profile of the ship), HMAS Norman, HMAS Nepal, and HMAS Nestor flanked by flames and laurel wreaths to represent her loss in action on 16 June 1942. The badge of the N Class Destroyer Association 1939-1945, with a profile of an N Class ship encircled by a 'wreath' rope and 'Dedicated to the Glory of God' below. The artist, Dacre Smyth (1923-2008), included verses of his own as a tribute to the destroyers.

The N-Class destroyers were a flotilla of ships built for the British Royal Navy. Early in the Second World War, five were loaned to the Royal Australian Navy to be manned by Australian sailors. The Napier, Nestor, Nizam, Norman and Nepal served in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Indian Oceans.
