The oval was established to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two. 

Henley War Memorial Deferred.
A recommendation from the Henley Advancement Association to the Henley Council that a new oval at should be a memorial to servicemen and women who died in the recent war, was deferred last night for further consideration by the committee.

A sand castle competition and a treasure hunt for prizes given by "The Advertiser" will be features of the carnival on January 24 and 26 in aid of the Henley and Grange Memorial Oval. Festoons of colored lights and bunting will form a canopy over  Main street square and portion of the foreshore. A procession of decorated vehicles and floats will precede the official opening ceremony by the Mayor of Henley and (Mr. A. E. Northey).
