Goonoowigall School Honour RollPrint Page
The wooden honour roll commemorates former students of the school who served in World War Two.
Mr. Smith asked Mr. Jenner to unveil the Honor Roll which contained the names of ex-pupils of the school who are overseas fighting for King and country in the present war. In his opening remarks Mr. Jenner said he felt it a very great honour indeed to be asked to perform this ceremony, first because it is the first one he had heard of being unveiled in the present war, and second because it was the first time he had ever performed such a ceremony, so if he did not do it right he would like his shortcomings to be overlooked. He congratulated the Goonoowigall P. & C. in thus honouring their brave lads and placing their names on the scroll of fame for future generations to ponder over.
There is a duty we all owe to ourselves, to God and to our country and although we may not all rise to be a general, or a teacher, or even a minister, if we keep these three things in our minds we shall be able, by God’s grace, to see that duty, and by God’s help to perform it in just such a manner as these lads are doing. They are doing a very noble work suffering untold misery, danger with a brave heart and a smiling face, all for us and it is our bounden duty to remember them in our prayers. After a brief retrospect of the present world situation, Mr. Jenner asked all to stand and sing the National Anthem, during which he slowly drew aside the flag which had draped the board throughout, and revealed the following names: C. C. Charter, S. Charter, R. C. Dean, C. Dean, G. Dean, Reg Dean, R.Dwyer, D. McNaught, F.L. Staggs, F.W. Staggs, R.Watchman.
