Stone of RemembrancePrint Page
The Stone of Remembrance commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two.
The Stone of Remembrance was designed by the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for the Imperial War Graves Commission, to commemorate the dead of World War One, and to be used in war cemeteries containing 1000 or more graves, or at memorial sites commemorating more than 1000 war dead.
Hundreds were erected following World War One, and it has since been used in cemeteries containing the Commonwealth dead of World War Two as well.
The Sydney War Cemetery is Australia's largest war cemetery however does not contain over 1000 graves, and the stone is in the cemetery because it was intended to be installed at the Ambon War Cemetery in Indonesia, but could not be placed there due to difficulties in shipping it there at the time is was built.
