The Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome
The Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome was an integral part of the No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery School established in December 1940 as part of Australia`s contribution to the Empire Air Training Scheme. Of the more than 5,000 RAAF and WAAAF men and women stationed at Evans Head, 1,000 lost their lives in service to their country.
The importance of this site to Australia`s history, and its social and cultural fabric was recognised on 22nd November 2002 when the Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. The RAAF and WAAAF who served here during World War II wish to acknowledge the work of the Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome Committee, under the leadership of the president, Dr Richard Gates, in preserving this site in recognition of fallen comrades, and for its importance in Australia`s defence. The lessons of history must never be lost.
