Tyalgum District Roll of HonourPrint Page
The wooden honour roll commemorates those from the District who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two.
A memorial to district men who paid the supreme sacrifice in World War II. was unveiled in Tyalgum Literary Institute on Sunday last. The ceremony was conducted by of the Church of England and Church of Christ. Present on the dais were the Rev. R. Schmitzer, of Uki, who was chairman, Rev. R. L. Edwards of Murwillumbah, Mr R. F. Goode, representing the Church of Christ, Mr and Mrs J. H. Smith, of Bray's Creek, Tweed Shire president, Cr A. Buckley, the president of Tyalgum Red Cross, Mrs W. Choat, the president of Tyalgum branch of the R.S.S.A.I.L.A., Mr G. A. Kirby, and the president of Tyalgum Welfare and Memorial Committee, Mr W. Trim. Present in a large congregation were Cr S. E. Spies and Mrs Spies, Cr E. Merryweather, Mesdames A. Buckley, Edwards and Goode and a number of visitors from Murwillumbah.
The service opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by the hymn "O God, Our Help In Ages Past." prayers were delivered by the Rev. Schmitzer, and Miss Everingham sang "Let Us Have Peace." A Bible reading was delivered by Mr R. F. Goode and was followed by a solo "Abide With Me," by Miss I. Gallard. The chairman then called on Mrs J. H. Smith, of Bray's Creek, to unveil the memorial. The unveiling disclosed a maple board, bearing the names of six local men, with the dates and place of their deaths. The names were G. Choat, T. King, H. Longbottom, E. McEwan, J. Smith and V. N. Vidler. The Rev Edwards then pronounced the Dedication, which was followed by two minutes silence for the fallen of the two world wars. The Rev Edwards then delivered a forceful and appropriate address. The Recessional was sung by the congregation and Mr W. Trim presented a Bible, as a token of remembrance, to the mother of each fallen soldier.
