The plaque commemorates those who died on the U.S.S. Lexington during the Battle of the Coral Sea.
In May 1942, the U.S.S. Lexington, along with 216 of its crew and 35 aircraft, was sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea. The wreckage of the ship was found 800 kilometres off the coast of Queensland in 2018.
