Dear Monument Australia visitors, we are a self-funded, non-profit organisation, dedicated to recording monuments throughout Australia. Over time the costs of maintaining this website have risen substantially (in fact they are probably larger than those of many companies who exist for profit). In the past we have borne all the costs associated with maintaining the website but we are now having difficulties in paying the monthly expenses.
If Monument Australia is useful to you, please make a donation to keep this historical and educational resource available. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hurstville Voluntary Aid Detachment 826 Honour Roll Print Page

On Saturday, April 17, Major Joyce Snelling (Assistant Controller of A.A.M.W.S.) unveiled the Hurstville Voluntary Aid Detachment's roll of honour at the Memorial Hall, Hurstville. Mrs. E. E. Harris. (Commandant of Hurstville Detachment) introduced the chairman, Ald. W. E. Smith, who spoke in glowing terms of the service rendered by the detachment during the war years. He was supported by other speakers. Among the guests welcomed by Ald. Smith were Mr. W. Clegg and Mr. J. Dowsett (President and Secretary of Hurstville Sub-branch of the R.S.S.A.I.L.A.), Matron Prichard (St. George Hospital), Miss Gillon and Mrs. Pritchard (Red Cross branches), Mrs. Pearson (ex-Commandant), Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, Misses Millin, Jackson and Power (Commandants of V.A.D.).
In unveiling the roll of honour Major Snelling said it was an honour to officiate at such a function. She spoke enthusiastically of the service both the V.A.'s and enlisted members had given during the war years. The honour board, which is made of cedar, was admired by all the guests, and Mr. Bellfield, who was responsible for the board and the recording of the members' names, was congratulated for the excellent piece of workmanship. It contains the names of 97 voluntary aids who were members of the detachment during the war years, 1939-1945, including thirty aids who enlisted in the A.A.M.W.S. Musical items were rendered by Mrs. Small and Miss Patsy Parkes, after which afternoon tea was served.
