The marble sculptured plaque on the outside of the school building commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. On either side of the sculpture are 76 names of those from the District who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.
HEATHCOTE, Monday.
Today in the presence of a large number of residents the bronze honor tablet, containing the names of seventy-six soldiers of the Heathcote district who fell in the war, was unveiled at Heathcote Memorial Higher Elementary School by Mr. Hansen, Director of Education. Mr. E. A. Coyle, M.L.A., expressed the desire of the State Parliament to do everything humanly possible for returned soldiers, but it was also the Commonwealth obligation.
The State was continually pressing upon the Commonwealth the necessity of recognising the services of men. If elected, Mr. Lawson would be one man in the Senate to look after the State rights, and one of the greatest rights was that the Commonwealth should stand up to its obligations to provide for returned soldiers. Mr. Hansen referred to the establishment of the school, and the efforts of the people in connection therewith. Messrs. Hansen and Coyle were afterwards tendered a civic function at: the Heathcote Hotel.
