Hawkesdale State School Honour RollPrint Page
The honour roll commemorates former students and those from the district who served in World War One. The roll was presented to the school by Mrs Boyd who had four sons who served in the war.
The Hawkesdale Mechanics' Institute was packed to overflowing on Friday, 28th ult., when a handsome honor roll presented to the State school by Mrs. W. Boyd, of Tarrone, and bearing the names of 43 soldiers of the town was unveiled. Cr. A. H. Baird presided, and after musical items by Mrs. B. Whitehead and a recitation by Mr. Gow had been rendered, called on Mrs. McDonald to unveil the honor roll. Mrs. McDonald has four soldier sons at the front, and was greeted with loud applause when she stepped forward to perform the ceremony.
Cr. Baird said Hawkesdale had sent a strong quota to the front, and some of them would never come back. He hoped those who would return would come back in good health and be able to see the honor roll with their names inscribed on it in its proper place in the Hawkesdale State school. On behalf of the pupils, past and present, he thanked Mrs. Boyd for her splendid gift, and said she would always be remembered as well as the honor roll. (Applause). Mr. French, head teacher, supported Cr. Baird in a few remarks, and read out the names on the roll. There were 35 ex-scholars of the Hawkesdale school, and the balance were district volunteers, whom he considered should be placed thereon.
