Eltham Methodist Church Honour Roll Print Page Print this page

The white marble honour roll commemorates 27 men who had been connected with the church and Sunday School who served in World War One.

On Sunday afternoon last, at the local Methodist Church, Captain-Chaplain Rev. C. Tregear unveiled a beautiful white marble tablet containing the names of those who served in the great war, and who had been connected with the church and Sunday school. The honour list was headed by the names of those who had died on active service. The Rev gentleman preached eloquently and feelingly from the text, "Greater love hath no man," etc. Having himself lost a son, gave to his sermon a greater weight, and it may be said that a more impressive service was never held in the church.

Mr. Tregear is a great champion of  the " digger," and' made a strong appeal to his hearers to criticise him less and help him more.  He also stated that no district that he knew had proportionately sent more lads to the front or done more to do them honor on their return.  The memorial obelisk was something to be proud of as perpetuating the memory of those who showed that "greater love."
