Port Cygnet State School Roll of HonourPrint Page
The wooden honour roll commemorates those who served in World War One. It lists 37 names.
A very successful social at which about 150 were present was held in the Port Cygnet State-shool last week when the Warden (Councillor Markham) unveiled the school honour board. The board contained not only the names of those who had attended the school and had performed the highest duty of citizenship in such a crisis, but it would be to present and future generations of Cygnet school children an inspiration to attain the highest ideals. The list did not pretend to be exhaustive as it was known that three or four names had unfortunately been omitted particularly that of Mr J Ross (ex head teacher), who was now in camp at Claremont.
The Mercury (Hobart), 24th July 1918.
Note : the “Tasmanian War Memorials Data Base” , compiled by Fred Thornett which is located at the State Library of Tasmania, contains a comprehensive listing of the names on this honour roll.
