Katanning & District Honour RollPrint Page
The honour roll commemorates those from Katanning and District who served in World War One. The roll consists of three boards.
The district roll of honour was unveiled, in the Katanning Town Hall last Sunday in the presence of about 500 persons. The roll is contained on three honour boards. The proceedings throughout were marked by great enthusiasm. A choir of 40 voices occupied the stage, and rendered material assistance, speeches were delivered by Mr. Thomson M.L.A., Mr. Bray (vice-president of the Returned Soldiers and Sailors Provident Association), and others, and the speeches were interspersed with singing. The unveiling ceremony was very impressive, and during this part of the proceedings the Katanning Brass Band played the National Anthem, after which a few patriotic airs were rendered in first-class style under the baton of Mr. A. Morrell. The centre board was unveiled by Mrs. Joy, who had three sons at the front, one of whom had been killed in action; whilst the side panels were unveiled by Mrs. Keeley, who has four sons in khaki, and Mrs. Treasure, also with four sons fighting for king and country.
The three boards, which are made of dressed and polished jarrah, occupy a prominent position in the vestibule of the hall. On top of the centre panel is the following inscription-" Roll of Honour, Katanning, 1914, Men from Katanning district who have enlisted in defence of Empire" Underneath are artistically painted the flags of the Allies, the Australian and British flags occupying the centre position, while on the left are those of Japan, Russia, and Italy, and on the right those of Serbia, Belgium, and France. Then follow 740 names of those who have enlisted, the number including 31 who have yielded up their lives.
