Marbro State School Honour RollPrint Page
The honour roll commemorates 22 former pupils who served in World War One.
At Marbro School on Saturday night, the 9th inst; witnessed by a large gathering of people, two very striking and memorable events took place. One, an old time custom, (a Christmas tree)—the other, a more impressive ceremony, the unveiling of the School Honour Board. At 7 30 the children and parents began to arrive, and soon a start was made in the distribution of toys. Santa Claus ably keeping up his reputation, and filling each child with a keen sense of joy. Having disposed of the toys from the Christmas tree, preparations were made for the more important event of the evening. By now the school was taxed to more than its capacity, many having to witness the ceremony through the door and windows.
One regretable feature of this evening, was the unavoidable absence of Col. Benton, D S.O.,who was to have officiated at the ceremony, and Rev F Sanderson who was to have acted in a likewise capacity. In the absence of Col. Denton, Mr. Spencer, of Piawaning, kindly and ably filled his place, and Mr. W. Edgar, of Glentromie, admirably carried out the duties of chairman. The Rev. Father (The Prior of New Norcia Mission) was the minister of the evening. Many touching speeches were made, having reference to the late war, and the men whose names appeared on the honor board, and the ceremony closed with everyone singing the National Anthem. The Honor Board, which was draped with the Union Jack and Australian flags, is made of polished jarrah, the names of those who served in the great war being attached on brass.
