Town of Yorketown & District of Melville Roll of HonourPrint Page
The honour roll commemorates those from Yorketown and the District of Melville who served in World War One.
Last Friday was arranged for the unveiling of the Yorketown and Melville roll of honour by His Excellency Sir Henry Galway. Unfortunately the weather was so rough in the Gulf that the Governor had to postpone his visit. The programme that had been arranged for the day was carried out as far as possible. During the afternoon speeches and musical items were given at the town hall. The Mayor apologised for the absence of His Excellency, and announced that the roll would be unveiled at a later date. Afterwards about 500 people had a public tea at the boys' club.
A concert was given in the town hall in the evening. A good programme was given by the Glee Club (Misses Skinner, Farrow, Friebe, and Woods, Messrs. Young, McColl, Lloyd, and Goldsworthy), the school children, Messrs. Steele, Heaney, and Carmichael, and Mr. S. Stanley (juggler). The Lyric Orchestra also rendered selections. Public supper was provided afterwards at the boys' club. The proceeds for the day will be devoted to a soldiers' memorial to be erected in the town.
