Leighton District Roll of HonourPrint Page
The honour roll commemorates those from the Leighton District who served in World War One.
An interesting concert was held in the Leighton Hall on the 16th May 1917 and was much appreciated throughout. The proceeds of the concert will be devoted to a Roll of Honour for the Leighton Hall on which will be all the names of all Leighton and district soldiers who serve in the great cause of freedom.
Burra Record (SA), 23rd May 1917.
An impressive ceremony was held on Sunday afternoon, April 7th, at the Leighton Hall, the occasion being the unveiling of a Roll of Honour, which had been erected in memory of the lads who have enlisted from that district. The Chairman ( Mr.Warnes) said there were 40 names now on the Roll, and it would be noticed shortIy that four names had stars beside them, which showed that they had been killed. Some families had sent all their sons, and some, all that were eligible, and they were all proud of those who so splendidly realised their duty. Mr Warnes then asked Mrs D. E. Williams to unveil the Roll of Honour. He said she was a mother who had sent four noble lads to the front, one had paid the supreme sacrifice, one had returned, one was on his way home severely wounded, and the other was still at the front. She was the most appropriate person to perform the ceremony and they were proud of what she had given for King and Country.
