The memorial park was originally established to commemorate those who served in World War One.

BIRCHIP, Friday.— Birchip children had with them for their Empire day celebrations Lord Somers, who, with Lady Somers, visited Birchip and Wycheproof today. Their Excellencies were met at the railway station by the shire president and councillors, a local scout troop forming a guard of honor. At the shire hall they were presented with an illuminated address by the shire president (Mr. Rickard). Lord Somers officially opened and named the Birchip shire soldiers' memorial park, where another guard of honor was formed of district returned soldiers. At the school the Governor delivered an address to the scholars.
