Dear Monument Australia visitors, we are a self-funded, non-profit organisation, dedicated to recording monuments throughout Australia. Over time the costs of maintaining this website have risen substantially (in fact they are probably larger than those of many companies who exist for profit). In the past we have borne all the costs associated with maintaining the website but we are now having difficulties in paying the monthly expenses.
If Monument Australia is useful to you, please make a donation to keep this historical and educational resource available. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Tuggerah Public School Honour RollPrint Page

The honour roll commemorates former students of the Tuggerah Public School who served in World War One.
A very handsome Honor Board was unveiled in Tuggerah Public School on Saturday afternoon, 18th June, in the presence of a large number of relatives and interested residents. The tablet, which is of polished Queensland maple, is 4 feet high and 39 inches wide, divided into two panels, each containing 23 names. The total cost has been over £10. A super-scription reads: "In honor of the old boys of Tuggerah Public School, who served the Empire in the Great War."
Of the 46 boys who enlisted, 11 either were killed in action, or died of wounds. Apologies for absence were received from Mr.W. E. Black, Inspector of Schools, Mr. Councillor Chapman, and Rev. W. M. Herford. In the course of his introductory remarks, the teacher referred to the desirability of having a School Memorial, in addition to the one in the Public Hall, because so many former residents of Tuggerah, who enlisted would otherwise be unrecorded, for there are four times as many names on the School Tablet as on the one in the Hall, and only two of those on the Hall Memorial occur on the School Honour Board. In addition, a Memorial was necessary in the School, where it would be a daily inspiration to patriotism to the coming generations of scholars.
The tablet, which had been covered by an Australian Flag, was then unveiled by Mrs. Joseph Preston, who also dedicated the Memorial to the memory of the old boys who enlisted.
