Gresford School of Arts Memorial PorchPrint Page Print this page

The Gresford School of Arts Memorial Porch was erected in memory of those who died in service or were killed in action during World War One.

On Thursday last there was a very fine gathering at the new School of Arts, when the foundation stone was well and truly laid by Miss Marion Lindeman, and the hall officially opened by the Hon. Walter Bennett, M.L.A., followed by a grand ball. The original School of Arts was established in the year 1889 on land presented by the late Mrs. Lindeman, wife of Doctor Lindeman, of Cawarra. The institution was successfully conducted for many years, and its success was mainly due to the great attention paid to its welfare by the late Mr. George Grey.

Mr. W. H. Pender, architect, of West Maitland, prepared the necessary plans and specifications and upon tenders being invited, that of Mr. J. Idstein, of West Maitland, was accepted. The new hall is beside the old wooden building, which is now used as a billiard, room, library, and supper room. It is of brick on stone foundation. The inside walls are cement dado and plaster, with fibro plaster ceiling. The floor space is 60 ft. x 30 ft., with 14 ft. stage. The flooring boards are of dressed tallow wood, and a spacious porch was erected by the Paterson and Allyn Rivers R.S and S.I.L. in memory of those who gave their lives during the great war.
