Parish of the Holy Trinity Honour RollPrint Page
The honour roll commemorates members of the congregation who served in World War One.
Holy Trinity Church, Coburg was crowded to the doors on Wednesday evening, Oct. 31, when the handsome honor roll, containing the names of 150 members of the congregation who had enlisted to fight for King and Empire was unveiled by His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr. Clarke. The services were opened with a processional hymn, Soldiers of Christ, after which the choir, the clergy and the Mayor of Coburg (Cr.A. Bush, in his robes of office), entered. Next the whole congregation joined whole heartedly in singing the National Anthem with a special verse —
Far from the Empire's Heart
Make us a worthy part;
God save the King.
Keep us for ever Thine,
Our land Thy Southern Shrine,
And in Thy grace divine,
God save the King.
Prayers, psalms and lessons appropriate to the occasion followed, and after special prayers for King and country, for our sailors and soldiers, and those of the Allies and an anthem, the Archbishop performed the unveiling ceremony preceding it with a dedication prayer. Other prayers and hymns followed, and then His Grace delivered an impressive address, emphasising the noble example of those who had already enlisted and pointing out the manifest duty of all capable of doing so of taking their part in the fight for civilisation for the Empire and for Australia. A prayer for the nation and the benediction brought a most impressive service to a conclusion. Amongst the names on the roll are those of twenty-three who have given their lives for the Empire, of 94 on active service including that of Lieut. Col.Layh, D.S.O., and of 22 who had returned home. The names of 9 appear as in camp, but as a matter of fact they are now on the seas enroute for the war. Altogether the record is one of which Coburg,and especially Holy Trinity Church may justly feel proud.
Brunswick and Coburg Leader (Vic.), 9 November 1917.
