The memorial commemorates those who served on HMAS Submarine AE2 during World War One.  The memorial features a replica of the submarine as well as a sculptured plaque detailing HMAS Submarine AE2's exploits.

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) submarine, AE2, was commanded by the British Royal Navy's Captain Henry Stoker, with a crew of 35 submariners. AE2 was the first Allied submarine to navigate the Dardanelles into the Sea of Marmara on the day of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli. It was sunk on 30 April 1915. All crew survived and were captured by the Turks but four died in captivity.
