The mural commemorates the centenary of Armistice and those who served in World War One.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin has commended the Barmera RSL Sub-Branch on receiving Federal Government funding to develop a project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of the First World War.

Mr Pasin said the RSL had received $7,942 under the Armistice Centenary Grants Program to create a memorial mural at the sub-branch in commemoration of the centenary of Armistice “This project will be a fitting tribute to appropriately acknowledge the end of the war 100 years ago,” Mr Pasin said.

Barmera RSL is one of many successful applicants across the nation receiving funding for community projects to commemorate Australia’s wartime history and the 100th anniversary of the Armistice.

“Commemorating this important date in our history is a true testament to the success of the Anzac Centenary 2014–18 and I have no doubt that this project will create a lasting legacy of remembrance,” Mr Pasin said. These grants have been designed to deliver local projects and activities to communities like Barmera to commemorate Australia’s role in the First World War and pay tribute to service men and women and the Armistice Centenary.

Mr Pasin visited Barmera RSL last week for the official opening of the finished mural and commemorative dinner.

“The dedication and hard work of organisations such as the Barmera RSL ensure veterans and their families receive essential services, support and opportunities allowing them to continue active roles in their local communities,” Mr Pasin said. “The Australian Government will continue to invest in and support to organisations helping veterans and their community.”

LEST WE FORGET

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
