Women of World War OnePrint Page Print this page

The mural recognises the role of working class women to support the war effort and reflects the resilient character of Kurri Kurri during World War One.  It also includes local identity Maud Butler who dressed as a boy and stowed away, only to be discovered and sent home.

Funding of $10435 was received in 2018 through the Armistice Centenary Grants Program for the creation of the mural and the installation of a plaque commemorating efforts of women on the homefront during World War One.

The Women of World War I mural was created by local artists Peter Sesselmann and Stevi Cannon and is located on the Allworth Street wall of the Kurri Kurri Library. This mural recognises the role of working class women to support the war effort and reflects the resilient character of Kurri Kurri during WWI.  It also includes local identity Maud Butler who dressed as a boy and stowed away, only to be discovered and sent home.

The mural is based upon historical photographs with a “Modern Pop Art” graphic look giving a contemporary feel with the use of colour. Australian Army colours were chosen to reference the local and historical events.
From the Chambers, December 2019.
