Clifton`s Ltd Barraba Roll of HonourPrint Page Print this page

The photographic roll of honour commemorates those who worked at Clifton`s Ltd. who served in World War One.

A Barraba correspondent writes: — In connection with a recent intimation that Sergt. Laurie Clifton had been awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery in France, it is interesting to note that the firm of Clinton's, Ltd., of Barraba and Bingara, have contributed a very fair quota to the A.I.F. since the beginning of the war. In fact, every man who could go from the garage has already gone, and it is certainly not a place where an eligible with no ties would stand much prospect of success if applying for a position while the war continues. Clifton's, Ltd., roll of honor already bears the names of Gunner P. V. Clifton (governing director), Sergt. Laurie Clifton (secretary), Drivers Arthur Halloran; Fred Darcy, Oscar Ashford, Harry Dengate, and Fred and Gordon Sherwood, whose records are well known throughout the district. Of these, Gunner Dan Clifton was, on latest information in camp in England, but is probably now in France doing his bit alongside his former employees . Sergt. Laurie Clifton has won the Military Medal; and well knows what it is to be wounded; Fred Darcy was so severely knocked about as to necessitate his return to Australia, but has since re-en isted; and Fred Sherwood, also was twice wounded, but has since returned to duty. He and the others up to latest advices were still "carrying on" and looking forward to the day when they will see Fritz properly licked and militarism in its right place.
