Avenue of HonourPrint Page
The Avenue of Honour commemorates those who served in World War One. The avenue, which was planted in 1918 - 1919 was officially recognised as an Avenue of Honour in 2013.
The Avenue of Honour is in two parts:
1) Bridge Street from Victoria Street to High Street;
2) Cosmo Road from High Street to West Street.
The trees in the Avenue are mainly Elms (Ulmus x hollandia). The Ash trees in the middle section of Bridge Street are replacement trees that were planted during the reconditioning of the Avenue in the 1930s. Residents of Trentham proposed the Avenue in 1918. They sent a letter to the Kyneton Shire Council requesting Council's support for the proposed planting of street trees as a memorial to World War One enlistments from the District. Planting took place from 1918-1919 with the local community contributing half the costs and carrying out the work under the supervision of the Council Engineer. In 1937 the Trentham Progress Association applied to Council for assistance to have the Avenue of Honour restored, as the tree guards required repairing and some trees were in need of replacement. Again the community contributed to the costs of this work.
It`s taken years of hard work but two rows of trees in Trentham have finally been recognised as Avenues of Honour. Hepburn Shire Council last week voted to support the Trentham community’s efforts to have trees in Bridge Street from Watson’s Bridge to Victoria Street and Cosmo Road from High Street to Drummond Street officially recognised in its Hepburn Planning Scheme.
Trentham resident Andy Robertson spoke at last week’s council meeting and said he was hopeful the breakthrough would now lead to the establishment of a support group, perhaps a Friends of the Trentham Avenue of Honour.
“The Avenue was never officially opened, we think because council and the local community ran out of money, but both avenues of trees have always been considered by older locals as being an Avenue of Honour,” Mr Robertson said.
