Victorian School of Forestry Roll of HonourPrint Page
The honour roll commemorates former students of the school who served in World War One.
There was a fine gathering at the School of Forestry on Saturday afternoon on the occasion of the unveiling of the honor board of the school in connection with the great war. Mr Owen Jones (chairman of the Forestry Commissioners) and Mrs Jones were present and received a most cordial welcome. Sir Alexander Peacock, in a characteristic speech, performed the unveiling ceremony. The Rev. F. H. Ingamells, for the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and the mayor, for the citizens as a whole, also spoke. Mr Gay (the principal of the school) conducted the proceedings. He pointed out that the honor board would be an incentive to present and future students to acquit themselves well as forest officers.
Sir A. J. Peacock (Minister for Forests) gave an interesting address, dealing with the sacrifices of the Australians in the great war after which he unveiled the honor board. This a magnificent piece of work, and bore the following inscription: “Victoria School of Forestry. Roll of Honor. Boston, N. L.; Galbraith. D. K.; Ingle, R.; Lindsay, R. G.; M'Donald, N. A.; Ritchie, W. L.; Smith, G. T.; Watson, C. W.; Weickhardt, F. C. Killed in action, 1914-1919.” The badge of the school, V.S.F.” surrounded by wattle blossom, was incorporated in the design, and this, was especially a beautiful piece of work. Mr Gay in the course of his remarks, stated that of the 21, or possibly 22, students of the school eligible to answer the call of country, nine had enlisted, which was a percentage probably greater than any other school. The mayor (Cr W. B. Grose) spoke on behalf of the citizens of the town, and extended a welcome to Mr Owen Jones and Mrs Jones.
