The wooden honour roll commemorates employees of the railway who served in World War One. The board was unveiled during the Queensland Premier`s visit to Maryborough in March 1917.
MARYBOROUGH, April 2.
The opportunity was taken by the railway employees of the Maryborough workshops and offices of the recent visit of the Premier to officially unveil the honour board erected as a mark of appreciation of the numbers of the branch who had enlisted for active service. The District Traffic Manager (Mr.J. J. Petford) in welcoming the Premier mentioned that the board had been given by the Commissioner, and the work of engraving the names &c., had been done by subscription from the employees. The Premier mentioned that there were 123 names on the honour board of men who had been connected with the department.
He understood that was a very high proportion of the eligible railway men employed in connection with the Railway Department at Maryborough. It spoke highly for the railway service generally, and the service here particularly, while it was an answer to those who might be deposed to think that unionists were not prepared to enlist. (Hear, Hear.) He referred to what was being done to assist returned soldiers in the way of helping them to take up selections, and amidst applause, unveiled the board. The board is erected to the right of the main entrance way to the railway station, facing Lennox Street.
