The obelisk lists the names of those from the district who died in service or were killed in action during World War One and in whose memory trees were planted.

An avenue of trees was planted to commemorate the fallen and an obelisk was also erected as part of the Avenue. The obelisk was moved several times since 1925 and was relocated back to its original position on the corner of Alexandra Parade and Bridge Street in 2017.

The trees were planted north of the bridge in Molesworth Street and included Winterton and Alexander Parades. Approximately 20 trees silky oak trees remain in Winterton Parade. Some of the trees were replaced in 2004 and none of the original plaques remain.
