The plaque commemorates the men from Fremantle and surrounding districts who died as a result of World War One.
The original design of the Fremantle War Memorial was to include an internal stairway and marble tablets to hold the names of those from Fremantle and surrounding districts who died as a result of the Great War. The design of the war memorial was scaled down due to construction costs. The plaque`s text was originally written by Dr James Sykes Battye. The text was written for inclusion into a time capsule buried at the monument.
During a pre-restoration inspection of the memorial, Fremantle fire brigade members went inside the structure, found the capsule, and its contents were copied before replacing them within the memorial.
