9th Battalion, Royal Australian RegimentPrint Page
The plaques, mounted on a plinth, commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in the Vietnam War while serving with the 9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. The battalion was raised specifically in South Australia to serve in that conflict.
9th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (9RAR) was raised on 13 November 1967 in Adelaide. The battalion arrived in Vietnam in November 1968, relieving 3 RAR. It formed part of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) and was based at Nui Dat in Phuoc Tuy province. 9RAR was primarily engaged with pacification operations. All but three operations took place in Phuoc Tuy. On 25 November 1969, 9RAR was relieved by 8RAR. The battalion arrived in Australia in December 1969.
Australia's military involvement in the Vietnam War began with the arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in South Vietnam during July and August 1962. Australia's participation in the war was formally declared at an end when the Governor-General issued a proclamation on 11 January 1973.
However, the end-date of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War has officially been amended to 29 April 1975 to reflect Australia’s further involvement in the war during the fall of Saigon in 1975. The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Australian War Memorial, in Canberra now recognise this new date.
