The plaque commemorates those who served in Vietnam War between 1962 and 1975. Funding was received in April 2016 through the Saluting Their Service Program.

The RSL service on the 18th August 2016, comprised a Commemorative Service with a march, starting at 10.45am, from the North Beach Bowling Club to the Memorial Precinct and wreath laying. The service started at 11.00am and provided the opportunity for the Northern Suburbs Vietnam Veteran community, Vietnamese Veterans, and the Vietnamese community, the wider ex-service community and school students to come together to commemorate the service and sacrifice of Vietnam Veterans. At the service a new commemorative plaque created for the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan and Vietnam Veterans’ Day was unveiled by the Governor of Western Australia, Her Excellency, the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AO.

Australia's military involvement in the Vietnam War began with the arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in South Vietnam during July and August 1962.  Australia's participation in the war was formally declared at an end when the Governor-General issued a proclamation on 11 January 1973.

However, the end-date of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War has officially been amended to 29 April 1975 to reflect Australia’s further involvement in the war during the fall of Saigon in 1975.  The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Australian War Memorial, in Canberra now recognise this new date.
