St Peter`s Anglican Church Print Page
The church commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and World War Two.
Appealing for a renewal of Christian heritage yesterday the Lieutenant-Governor (Sir Edmund Herring) said community failure to foster fellowship and sacrifice inevitably brought social disintegration and ruin. His Excellency was laying the foundation stone of St. Peter's Memorial Church, Box Hill. The church has been dedicated to the memory of fallen service men and women of the two wars. "There was never a good servicemen's unit without fellowship and comradeship, and without these there cannot be a good community," he said. "The greatest enemy to fellowship is greed. Today we find a tragic inability to pull together and disintergration all about us,"
Sir Edmund Herring added. "Christians must realise that fellowship demands readiness to give and to think of others before self. We cannot defy God's law without disaster." The Archbishop of Melbourne (Dr. Booth) said the church had spent more than £100,000 on social services. There were 45 new areas in Melbourne awaiting development. St. Peter's was destroyed by fire in 1949, and is being rebuilt on the old site. About £8000 is required for its completion.
