The Memorial Sanctuary, Chancel and Tower commemorates those from the Parish and District who died in service or were killed in action during World War One and World War Two. The memorial stone was laid in 1951 and the dedication was performed on the 17th May 1953.

When he dedicated the new war memorial sanctuary and tower at St. John's Church of England, Cessnock, on Sunday, the Bishop of Newcastle (Rt Rev. F. de Witt Batty) said he rejoiced with the people at the completion of the new chancel and tower. It was an occasion for congratulation, and as chairman of the Diocesan Council, he shared with them the hope that it would not be long before the generosity of the church people would put the building out of debt.

He was assisted in the ceremony by the Archdeacon of Newcastle (Ven. A. Williamson), Archdeacon of Maitland (Ven. C. Nicholls), Warden of St. John's College (Rev. Dr.T. Robinson), Rector of Morpeth (Rev. H. St. John), Rector of East Maitland (Rev. M. Williams), Rector of St. Paul's, Maitland (Canon C. Stretch), Rector of St. Mary's, Maitland (Rev. M. Redman), Rector of Branxton (Rev. R. Moore), Rector of Taree (Rev. R. Mc Culloch), Rector of Cessnock (Rev. N. Pullin), and Revs. H Kirby and H. Grayson. The Church was overcrowded for the ceremony and many heard the service in the grounds of the Church through amplifiers. Bishop Batty said the sanctuary and tower were a memorial to those who answered the call of love and duty and made the supreme sacrifice.
