The monument commemorates the 287,000 men who served undertook National Service between 1951 and 1972. The memorial is sited with the 2/12th Battalion memorial

In 2011, the monument was upgraded and enhanced due to a partnership between Mackay Regional Council and the Queensland Government, with a Community Memorials Restoration grant assisting to finance the new memorial.  Prior to the enhancement, each of the plaques were displayed on separate low concrete plinths.

Between 1951 and 1972, a total of 287,000 young Australian men were called up in two separate schemes for compulsory training in the Navy, Army and Air Force.  Of them, 212 died on active service in Borneo and Vietnam. National Service was part of Australia’s defence preparedness for three decades.
