The plaque was erected in memory of Australian nurses who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and World War Two.

It was erected at the instigation of Mrs. F. Kelly of South Australia, who in 1915 founded the South Austrlain Army Nurses Fund.  She devoted her life to the interests of nurses serving with the armed forces, and bequeathed a substantial amount of money to the church for the creation of the memorial.
