Yirrkala War MemorialPrint Page
The War Memorial originally commemorated Yolngu men who served in World War Two. An additional plaque was added in 2014 to commemorate Yolngu men and women who served in the various conflicts and peace operations in which Australia has been involved.
There is a plaque on the rock and four plaques on the base naming members of the Northern Territory Special Reconnaissance Unit which was a special force of Yolngu men trained by Squadron Leader Donald Thomson.

In grateful recognition of the service and sacrifice of the Yolngu men and women who served Australia and its allies in wars, conflicts and peace operations.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old ;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
