Margate - Snug Honour RollPrint Page
The wooden honour roll commemorates those from Margate and district who served in World Wars One and Two. The roll lists 135 names. The World War One Roll was unveiled in 1921 with the World War Two Roll being added at a later date.
The Honour Roll for the Margate Ward, Kingborough, was unveiled recently by the Mayor of Hobart (Colonel Snowden). The weather was very unfavourable, and the attendance not large. The board is of very handsome design, and was made locally by Mr. George Gill. It is of Tasmanian blackwood, with gold lettering (done by Mr. Hughes, of Hobart). Immediately underneath the honour roll, mounted on a blackwood slab, is hung the German machine gun presented by the Defence Department. The Mayor, who was accompanied by Mrs. Snowdon, was met on his arrival by the Warden (Mr. B. J. Pearsall), who welcomed him to the district; and asked him to unveil the honour roll. Having performed the unveiling ceremony (with the help of Mr. W. Smith, the vice-chairman of the committee), the Mayor expressed his pleasure at being present, and spoke of the sterling qualities shown by the Australians during the war.
There must, he said, always be a certain amount of sadness connected with such a ceremony, for their thoughts were partly with those who had not returned. He asked that those who had returned might be helped in every way, and made a special appeal for those who had come back shell-shocked and nervous wrecks. The religious part of the ceremony was in the hands of the Rector of Kingston (Rev. E. W. Julien). Miss Smith accompanied the hymns, "O God, Our Help in Ages Past" and the Recessional. Mr. Julien also proposed a vote of thanks to the Mayor and Mayoress, who had, he said, come there in spite of the very disagreeable weather. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem, and the Mayor and Mayoress, the Warden, the Rector, the returned men-very few of whom responded to the invitation to be present-and their relatives were entertained at an afternoon tea.
Mercury (Hobart), 18 June 1921.
