The gates commemorate those from the district who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and World War Two.

The gates were originally erected to commemorate soldiers of World War One and were at the entrance of the Memorial Park which was opened on the 28th September 1921. The memorial park is now known as the Stockport Recreation Ground.

A plaque containing the names of two brothers who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two was added to the gate on the 8th February 1946.

A large and representative public meeting was held in the Stockport Hall to consider the matter of a Soldiers' memorial. There was a division of opinion, regarding the nature of the memorial. Some want the hall enlarged and others want a memorial park, at present Stockport has no recreation ground.  Mr. P. O. Watts (chairman of the district council) presided, and Mr. Cyril Murray was elected secretary. Mr. Whitelaw (president of the hall committee) moved in favor of the hall being enlarged. Mr. A. Wilson moved for a memorial park.

Both gentlemen were requested to give an estimate of the probable cost of each scheme. At a further meeting the matter of costs was brought before the public, and it was decided to have a ballot on the matter by a week's voting to enable everybody to vote. The meeting pledged itself wholeheartedly to support which ever project is carried. Mr. G. Weste was appointed returning officer. All persons over the age of 17 are entitled to vote. Messrs. Whitelaw and Wilson were elected scrutineers. The voting is now on, conducted by Mr. West at his general store, and will end on Saturday next at 6 pm.

A guard of honor of returned servicemen will welcome the Premier (Mr. Playford) when he attends the unveiling of a memorial at Stockport on Friday. The plaque, which is set in the archway to Memorial Park, is in honor of two brothers, Sgt. J. and Pte. G. Edwards, the only two servicemen from Stockport to lose their lives during the war. The unveiling ceremony will be performed by their mother. Senator Mattner and Mr. Smith, MHR, will accompany the Premier.
