Sacred Heart College War Memorial OvalPrint Page
The oval commemorates former students of the college who died in service or were killed in action during World War One and World War Two.
The entrance used to say "Memorial Oval", but when the College did its major upgrade of facilities, the old entrance was removed.
Preparations for the "Continental" in aid of the War Memorial Appeal are going ahead well at the Sacred Heart College, Somerton. Many new features have been added to the array mentioned in last week's "Southern Cross." A shooting gallery is now in course of construction, and a well-known magician has been engaged to add to the day's fun. Bowling enthusiasts will get their share, too. A special bowling green is being prepared so that bowlers can try their skill. The march of the College Cadet Corps has been received with enthusiasm by the boys, and there is much training going on to show the people that the military bearing of the cadets is second to none in the State.
Sir George Jenkins will take the salute at the College grounds as the cadets finish their march from Glenelg. Sir George will represent the State Government. The defence authorities have given every co-operation, and the display of modern military equipment will be of interest to young and old alike. For the younger set, and the not so young, as well, there will be dancing "under the stars," with that famous band, "The Southern Jazz Group," supplying a session of the brightest music. Only about £1,000 is needed to complete the full amount necessary for the building of the War Memorial. This memorial will commemorate all those past students who fell during the two World Wars, and will take the form of memorial gates to the main college oval, with a new fence around the oval, that will make Sacred Heart Oval one of the most beautiful in the State and a fitting memorial to the fallen.
