The hospital was erected as a war memorial to commemorate those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

The foundation stone was laid on the 15th August 1958 and the hospital was officially opened by the Governor of South Australia, Sir Robert George on the 10th April 1959.

A public meeting at Snowtown last week recommended to the board of the Snowtown District Hospital that the proposed new hospital building be dedicated as a war memorial. The meeting also recommended that memorial gates be erected at the entrance and that suitable trees be planted. The chairman of the Snowtown District Council (Mr. P. S. Nottle) presided. The Snowtown branch of the Fathers' Association and the Snowtown sub-branch of the RSL will be asked to give their support to the plan.
