The memorial was erected by the Gelland Soldiers Club to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.  Councillor F. Jessup J.P. unveiled the memorial on April  27 1924.

Those who were died in service or were killed in action during World War Two and those who served in the Malay Peninsular, (1948 - 1960 and 1964 - 1965), Korea (1950 - 1954), Borneo (1962 - 1966) and Vietnam have also been subsequently commemorated.

Under the auspices of the West Croydon and Kilkenny sub-branch of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers' Imperial League and Gelland and District Vigilant Club an Anzac Memorial service was conducted at the Gelland Soldiers' Memorial yesterday afternoon. The attendance was estimated at 700 and the service was considered the best held in the district.  During the proceedings Mr. J. McInerney (president of the sub-branch) introduced Mrs. A. Edson  and Mr. A.J. Montgomery, who unveiled memorial tablets.

At a meeting of the Woodville Council last night Cr. Cooke said that the gun mounted in the soldiers' memorial at Gelland was regarded as inappropriate, and suggested that in its place a broken column in cement concrete should be provided by the council. The cost of the memorial to date, he added, had been borne by the R.S.S.I.L.A. He moved that a broken column 7 ft. 6 in. in height and 15 in diameter, with laurel leaves at the base, be obtained. The motion was seconded by Cr. Carter and carried.
