Holy Trinity War Memorial ChapelPrint Page
The Chapel commemorates those from the parish who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.
The Chapel and its entrance are on the west side of the church and distinct from the main church. On both far walls of the dais area are two marble plaques containing the parishers’ names who served in World War One. Just before the dais area, on the right, is a similar plaque for World War Two.
Opposite, on the left, is a “Book of Remembrance 1914-1919” in a wall inset covered with glass and a brass plaque. Below the altar, “THY NAME LIVETH EVERMORE” and below the dais, “IN THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919.”
A fine memorial chapel which has been erected at Holy Trinity Church, Kew, was consecrated by Archbishop Lees, yesterday, and is an addition to the main church building. The cost of its erection has been subscribed by parishioners and others and it is dedicated to the memory of the men of the parish who gave their lives in the Great War. A beautiful altar of Tasmanian oak has been placed at the head of the chapel. On each side of the altar tablets commemorate the names of the fallen.
The honorary architect of the chapel is Mr. Eric Teague. In addition to Archbishop Lees, Canon Sutton (the vicar), the Dean of Melbourne and other clergymen took part in the services. Sir Robert Best M.P., Mr. J. K. Merritt, M. L.C., and the Mayor of Kew (Cr. Woolcock) and other councillors were also present, and there was a crowded congregation. Dr.Lees delivered the sermon. After he had solemly consecrated the new chapel he gave a special address to the relatives of the fallen soldiers. He reminded them that the sacrifices made by these men for their country had not been in vain. Their example would act as an inspiration for future generations.
