Vietnam War 1962 - 1973

Following requests from the South Vietnamese Government in 1962 Australian troops joined forces from USA, Korea and New Zealand to assist with the security of South Vietnam from incursion of communist forces from the north.  In 1972, following political pressure from within Australia and the belief that the war could not be won, the last Australians were withdrawn.  50,000 Australians served in South Vietnam, with 496 killed and 2,400 wounded.

Lest We Forget

In 1948 members of the Malayan Communist Party started a campaign of terror and intimidation aimed at taking control of Malaya.  A state of emergency was declared on the 18th June 1948 and continued until 31st July 1960.   Australian involvement commenced with all three armed services taking part.  51 Australians were killed and 27 wounded.  Following the formation of Malaysia, Indonesia started a policy of confrontation against the new state.  Australia service personnel were involved from 1962 - 1966.  23 australians were killed and 8 wounded.
