The Great Synagogue Honour BookPrint Page Print this page

The honour book originally contained the names of Jewish Soldiers from New South Wales who served in World War One. The names of those who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two were also added to the book at a later date.

The Jewish community in New South Wales decided some time ago that their memorial of their fellow-nationalists who served in the Great War should be a hall in Darlinghurst road, Sydney, and the building was formally opened on Armistice Day by their co-religionist and great Australian soldier, General Sir John Monash. The Speaker of the local Legislative Assembly (Mr. Daniel Levy) presented for the hall a replica of the historic picture of the Gallipoli landing. On the same occasion there was deposited in the Sydney Synagogue a magnificent illuminated volume containing records of all the Jewish soldiers.

The Sydney "Daily Telegraph" describes this remarkable honour roll as "a magnificent illuminated volume in album form containing the names of the 900 or more men who enlisted for the war from the Jewish community in this State, together with their regimental history and other data. The album which has been worked right through in parchment, and which contains 50 pages, is regarded as one of the finest pieces of work of its kind ever produced in Australia. The fact that artists on the staff of John Sands Ltd. were engaged on the volume for about a year indicates the care which has been bestowed upon it.

The names of the men who enlisted have been burnt into the parchment in letters of gold, and surmounting each page is a Jewish emblem. Four of the pages are devoted to the names of those who made the supreme sacrifice. The volume, the cover of which bears an inscription in gold lettering, is bound in white vellum. The collecting of the data for the volume occupied a long period, apart from the time devoted to the execution of the work. The volume will stand for all time in the Synagogue as a priceless treasure of the Jewish community."
